Recommended Medical Kits
While passing through the stunning landscapes of Nepal, you must keep your health and safety as a paramount priority. At Destiny Excursion, we believe that proper preparation is an aspect that will make your trip without a hitch. One of the preparations for keeping your health in a good state while on the move is to have necessary and personal medikit with you. A well-packed medikit that works to your expedition efficiently can be the difference between an expedition that succeeds and one that does not. This guide will show you what to include in your medical kit based on where you are travelling, your activity type, and your altitude. Even though we have first aid on hand with us at all times on treks and tours, we really recommend carrying an individual medical kit for added security and confidence.
Why Bring A Personal Medical Kit?
Treks in isolated mountain regions may drop you miles from the nearest medical facilities. Road access is lacking in some of the treks, and even minor health issues can be major health issues if you are not adequately prepared. A properly stocked first-aid kit enables you to be fit for treating all kinds of minor injuries, illnesses, and altitude diseases at an initial stage.
Furthermore, some of the medications are not readily available in some regions of your destinations. Therefore, bringing along your familiar brands and prescription is an assurance that you won’t have to put your health on hold to discover new medications that you could substitute or alternatives that you are not aware of or compatible with you.
Basic Medical Kit Essential for All Travellers
Whereas individual drugs will vary, there are certain medical supplies that should be included in any medical kit. These necessities are:
- Adhesive bandages (various sizes): for small scrapes and cuts
- Antiseptic solution or wipes: to clean wounds
- Gauze pads and adhesive tape: for covering large wounds
- Scissors and tweezers: for splinters, ticks, or covering wounds
- Digital thermometer: to monitor fever
- Antihistamines: for allergic reactions
- Painkillers (Paracetamol, Ibuprofen): for headache, muscle pain, or fever
- Anti-diarrheal tablets (e.g. Loperamide): especially for tummy issues
- Oral rehydration salts (ORS): to prevent dehydration
- Motion sickness pills: for long car journeys or flights
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+): harsh sun rays are common at high altitudes
- SPF lip balm: to prevent chapped lips
- Insect repellent (DEET-based or natural alternative): especially in lowlands or forest areas
High-Altitude Specific Items
If your trip includes trekking in the Himalayas along routes such as Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang Valley, or Kailash Mansarovar, you need to carry some additional stuff for high-altitude travel along with the aforementioned medications. The most crucial medications and medical equipment you need to carry for high-altitude trekking are:
- Acetazolamide (Diamox): usually prescribed for preventing and treating altitude sickness (consult your doctor first)
- Cough drops and sore throat sprays: dry, cold air can tickle your throat
- Nasal saline spray: for dry noses in cold conditions
- Fluid tablets: additional fluid required for high-altitude
- Pressure bandages or knee/ankle supports: to stabilize joints on uneven terrain
Personal Prescriptions and Medical Needs
If you are on prescribed medication, you will need to bring enough medical supplies to see you through your entire journey, as well as some extra days’ worth of delays. Pack them in their original labelled package or container as well as the copy of your prescription. If you have long-term illnesses such as asthma or heart disease, consult with your doctor before travelling and let your group leader know in case of an accident.
For Group Trekkers
For longer treks or for large groups, you may also carry other items for the group. They are medical supplies like:
- Stethoscope and blood pressure monitor: for routine health screening
- Pulse oximeter: useful for assessing oxygen levels at high altitude
- Sterile syringes: in remote wilderness locations in case of an emergency
- Broad-spectrum antibiotics: as advised by your doctor
- Emergency space blankets or thermal sheets: for cold conditions
Your Destiny Excursion trip guide is carrying a top-of-the-line first aid kit, and guides are certified in wilderness first aid. Either way, individual kits promote faster response and more comfort when things like blisters occur.
Additional Tips
Store your kit in a waterproof, durable pouch and keep it within easy reach – don’t put it at the bottom of your pack where you might find it difficult to access when you need it. Before you travel, you also need to inspect all contents for expiration dates and check their effectiveness. You also have to customize your medication kit based on duration, destination, and your personal health conditions.
